The Bioethics Master’s degree program at Trinity International University, just northwest of Chcago, is pleased to announce the newly-endowed annual Trinity Bioethics Lectureship. The inaugural lecture, “Rights of Conscience in Health Care: Imagine Your Doctor or Nurse without a Conscience,” will be delivered on March 20 by Dr. Christopher Hook, pioneer of bioethics at Mayo Clinic.

Today some people in health care, among other areas of contemporary life, are saying that they can’t in good conscience participate in certain actions that others are doing. Some, for instance, are saying that they can’t help kill any of their patients even if those patients ask them to prescribe a lethal dose–an action that has long been contrary to what medicine has stood for.

But increasingly people are insisting that there should be no place for conscience to guide the actions of health care professionals or others. Is there no place for conscience today, or can it be allowed to operate within definable limits?

Following Dr. Hook’s lecture there will be time for Q/A and discussion, and then refreshments. The lectureship will be in Kantzer Auditorium at Trinity International University (2065 Half Day Road, Deerfield), starting at 7:00 p.m. The evening is free and open to all. It will be streamed live online at stream.tiu.edu.
